Greets,

In the next few weeks I will be getting hold of an old AMD 400 box, with 256Mb RAM which I am hoping to use as an FTP server that I can leave up 24/7.

As the machine doesn't come with a monitor, and I can't afford to get another one yet, I was hoping to network that and my existing machine together using 10/100 NIC and some cross over cable.

My question is this: Using the above network setup, can I use PCanywhere (or something similar) to control the FTP server (just general maintenance) from my other machine (peer-to-peer), or do I need to set them up as a client-server?

And also, can setup my other machine to share the net connection on the FTP server? both machines will have Windows 2000 pro on them.

Sorry if this sounds a bit muddled, I'm just trying to figure out in my head how to do it. Any suggestions/comments/improvements appreciated.

Thanks for reading.

As far as using a program to control the other PC I don't think there should be a problem....

You would just have to have the monitor hooked up to the client to set it up obviously....

I have a pc set up as a router (running winroute) which I run my web/ftp/mail servers from as required.
I also use it to manage downloads and burn cds and some network rendering tasks.
It's a win2k based machine and does not have a monitor.

I use WinVNC to remotely operate it either from elsewhere on my home LAN or from work.

Its a superb small utility.
I must confess to never having tried pcanywhere though.

Get VNC or read about it here

The problem with most remote control apps, are you need the firewalls to let you get a direct connection.

So for me to get round this at work to control my home server, I use www.remotelyanywhere.com is allows HTTP tunneling, might be slower, but it works.....
