Back in the day it meant something to overclock. Overclocking a 386 or 486 up 33mhz would save you hundreds of dollars using the stock HSF.
Today an overclock is not necessaryly cheaper. You generally have to buy a nicer new HSF or Water cooled rig. Which will probally cost you about the same price as just buying the equivelent processor at the speed of your overclock.
And considering the overclocking community is a tiny percent of total sales, I doubt it is much of a problem for processor makers. The real sales are to businesses / joe blow / oem.
