I am setting up some servers for testing, which have various operating system requirements. The OS for the servers will be a variety of 2000/XP/2003/Vista.

I know to install 2000 before XP before Vista.

Each OS will have a separate partition, and there is a requirement that the booted OS will not be able to readily see the partition for the other OS. Easy enough to do; I just won't assign a drive letter to the non-booted OS partition.

I want each OS to boot off what it thinks it the C: drive. Problem I'm running into is I installed Win2k, then tried to install XP. The XP installer sees the Win2k partition as C: and the other partition that I want to install XP on is seen as something like F:

Not sure how to have each OS boot off what it thinks is it's own C: drive.

Is it possible? Maybe a special app needed? Will look around. Sounds interesting.

I had this exact problem. and Ive yet to fully solve this mystery.
Ive had 2 xps see themselves as C but other times one is C, other is D.
currently have a 7 and XP seeing themselves as C, but it can be a hassle. but yea, im still baffled how to control it 100%. that same physical hdd makes it rough.

I haven't made multiple partitions on a single hard drive in many years. Only did that in the old days when the BIOS didn't support the larger size HDDs. I've stayed away from running multiple OSes on the same computer. I have a computer room with multiple computers running one OS that matches the hardware capabilities. I've got an XT 8/12MHz running DOS. It gets cranky some days, but she still runs.

It just makes things easy. I always built a new computer in the old days, instead of just upgrading a part or two.

vmware is cool, but the new vmware is all java and slow as crap, I prefer the old one, lately I've been using Sun virtualbox exclusively, but I also had good experiences with qemu.

The acronis os selector I mentioned in another thread might help as well. It's older but you can still find it.
