Hey all! It's been awhile since I've been online but am still around. In fact right now I'm trying to build a PC for my friend's son who is going to use it for school.
I'm going to be creating a second USER for him with minimal privileges. I need to make sure he can't start browsing the net for porn. Any ideas on software so I can really keep this new user under close moderation?
Also any software that will log all of his activities would be ideal too.
Any help is much appreciated!
Darion

You have to understand this is really not possible and only a false sense of security. Put the machine in the living room with the monitor facing so the parent can see what's going on.

I'm certain there are some programs with a blacklist of adult websites. Perhaps I'll just search google and find a text file. I'd like to be able to block certain keywords when searching, isn't there a netnanny? He's going to be using the computer when no one is around. (online school at home all day) Maybe just a really good program that logs everything he did simply so I can block things as they come up. thanks for the replies so far! and thx for the blacklist mr. blog

there's software that will block out porn and stuff, i think the name was child control, there's also netnanny. it'll also block by keyword it'll also log where they go and allows for setting times they can access the pc or internet. h**p://www.salfeld.com/software/parentalcontrol/index.html

How old is the kid? We all look at porn. It's only a matter of time. Of course we would like our kids to not spend all their time looking at pron (especially when they should be doing schoolwork).
There are always ways around those "blocking" apps. Sometimes you just have to trust your kids, but keep an eye on them also.

17, he's not keen enough to get around a computer like I do. The whole purpose of the machine is for schoolwork, nothing else. I don't want him to think he can get distracted just because he has a computer. he hasn't been very motivated to go to school.

lol, he would never figure out the google images trick.
Well I downloaded that software and it looks like it's going to work. It will create an entire log of what he does and his father can browse it later.
i think my job is done for them thanks to your help HarryB. Thank you!

your welcome, it's easier to use software than try to use trickery. but there's also an unwritten solution to that problem that most software companies don't like cause they make no money off of it. It's called Solid Fist version 5.0. you see, solid fist works like this, you catch'em doing wrong on the pc, apply solid fist version 5.0 to their jaw. now there's a free service pack for solid fist which gives you solid foot. when solid fist can do no more or runs out of resources, solid foot takes over and continues to update that persons thinking, you may have to apply some patches to the recipient to stop any leakage but it seems to work very well except on the criminally insane, and vindictive mofo's.

You have to be careful with blocking out keywords and stuff... My old high school started doing that and when I was searching for viable resources for an essay, several potential sites were blocked out for "inappropriate" content.
In my rage, I defiantly typed "fuck you" into the google search box, which they promptly tracked and had me sent to the office for. I nearly laughed in his face when he told me what I was in trouble for.
So yeah, trying to block porn is fine (if a bit futile) and all, but definitely be careful how you do it.

I've been checking out that application and it's pretty awesome! I can literally lock out certain features during certain times of the day. It will log what he does, how much Internet he is using, and what programs he uses.
lol this application is pretty sick imho!

As Bitstorm said tho, really, it's an issue of child-parent communication about sexuality and appropriate use.
If he's like any of us, he'll find a way around it fast, like using a live disk, or a live usb, or and anonymous surfer with a securesite link, or he'll hack the hive for the pw.
If you want to know what was downloaded, set up an old box with linux and create a cache server, so he'll go through the cache server and there will be a footprint of everything.
