Got a new laptop.
So I'm trying to copy my music and a few movies to the laptop from my old desktop. Here is my setup.

Desktop: WinXP Pro 32bit, Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2ghz, 3gb ram
Laptop: Win7 Home Premium 64bit, Core i3 2.13ghz, 4gb ram
Router/Gateway: Linksys WRT54GS w/ DD-WRT set to Wireles G mode only.

I don't seem to be able to get over 1MB/s transfer between the two computers...
I realize that a 54mb connection in theory should only be able to transfer at 6.75MB/s, but i'm only getting .75MB/s-1.0MB/s.
I figured that i could at least get 3MB/s or something.
Am I wrong or is there something that I seem to be missing?

use ftp
its waaaaaay faster than windows share transfers across a lan
I use a portable ftp server and client on a key between lan machines.

seriously, you'll almost never get over 750k on share transfer, but ftp you'll get 4 meg/s

if you wanna try a quick solution, go download this open source thing called TeraCopy.
its an app that integrates into windows and tweaks the transfer.
in a nutshell, it moves the copy process to the top of the call stack. normally, this probably wouldn't do much, but if your PC has got a ton of shit running in the background. the copy process would suffer.

download it, and execute the copy process FROM the PC TO the laptop (push), as opposed to pulling from the PC.

this little app even does CRC... i freekin love it.

give it a shot, it might work

teracopy will also automatically rename folders/files if you have dups.

I stumbled on Teracopy about 6 months ago after reading something on Lifehacker about it...Teracopy is now on the list of "Apps To Install On Every Computer".

Once you start using Teracopy you'll wonder how you ever got along without it.

there's a portable version.

another essential, often goes hand in hand with Teracopy is Easyduplicate
finds all the duplicate files in a group of folders, regardless of name and minor header changes.
