So my sister (who's a real bitch) told me she wouldn't use the blu ray player i just bought her for her birthday so i decided to keep it. I need a new tv though since my old one has no hdmi inputs and hell... it's a bloody box. i wanna spend between $300-400. Is this a decent tv? After some surfing i thought this was ok. LG 32LD350 TV

that tv is only 720 so you won't get the higher pic quality. look at these. might be able to find them cheaper. http://www.walmart.com/ip/ProScan-40-40LD45Q/13348087http://www.walmart.com/ip/Element-ELDFT321/14321388and from tiger direct http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/guidedSearch.asp?CatId=37&sel=Price;Price5,Detail;133_269_20733_14636,Detail;133_1092_29118_29118 yeah they'e 60hz but still not a bad price.

Higher is better. Plasma has better contrast than lcd (because its not filtering backlight, its creating light in each pixel).
Apples and oranges. Anything with adaptive motion/colour/contrast is garbage.

the higher the contrast, the beter the blacks. an example, being able to seperate a person in a black suit standing in the shadow of a dark dark room.
but there's a limit on how much contrast a human eye can detect, so all these high numbers end up being a sales gimmick. I read this in avs forum and a fw home theater mags.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about contrast ratio. The advertised number is almost always higher than actual ratio. 120Hz is definitely better than 60Hz for LCDs, especially if you will be watching Blu-Ray.
$300-$400 is a tough price range for a 1080p TV (which is what you want to view Blu-Ray). Plus, a 7.1 A/V receiver is needed to get the full experience. A TV is a big purchase. It's something that should last you many years. It's wise to make an informed choice for a product that will serve you well.
Save up more money and then make a better purchase.

yeah, if you can wait a bit and save go that route. also receiver 7.1 and speakers polk. I prefer the pioner elites. there's not much of a price gap between the top end pioneer and the bottom end elite.
speakers, I prefer polk either in-wall or satellites with a polk sub. trust me, once you hook up some polks to a pioneer, it'l put some esoteric high end shit to shame.

What about the Hz rating for gaming? Espescially if you are hooking up to a PC? I read lower is better. Gets all confusing.
You want at least 1000:1 static ratio for decent black. Anything higher is usually dynamic. I understand Plasma has better color saturation than TFT. So does IPS.

the higher the Hz the better the refresh rate which should be good for gaming. unless your graphics card is crap. I would still choose a plasma over a lcd.

120Hz is the way to go (for LCD). They do have 240Hz (it's really 120Hz enhanced), but it doesn't seem much better (as of now). The high-end plasmas are 600Hz. I would get a Panasonic plasma (took over Pioneer's plasma tech). The G20 is the more affordable line. The VT25 is the high-end. The V20 is the middle man.
I agree with HB, the Pioneer Elite A/V receivers are real nice. The VSX-32 is a new 7.1 model that can be had for ~$800 USD. I'm a real fan of Cambridge Soundworks and Klipsch speakers. Polk is real nice also (have a Polk MOMO sub in my truck).

As I was saying -- static contrast ratio and decent framerate are important. multiples of 60 hz are good, because they don't do much interpolation, they just draw the pixels more often. Anything with 'smooth motion' or equivelant bullshit is guessing the in-between frames and makes for wicked motion blur (even if its smooth). Dynamic contrast pisses me off as the whole screen dims about a second after a visual change from light to dark, so its got better contrast only after a nauseating fade -- like someone is fucking with the contrast/brightness controls as you're watching. Just get a quality panel and have it display the damn source signal without any fucking around with it by the processor...

also get power protection, get a unit with coaxial protection cause last week a client that we did their home theater went away and came back to find his plasma hdmi ports not working, his projector hdmi not working, the pioneer elite receiver not working, and the hdmi splitter not working. what happened was lightning struck a neighbors tree and somehow hit the underground cable station which went through his coax, into his cablebox, came out through the hdmi which fried the hdmi splitter which fried the plasma, receiver, and the projector. I just got the projector back, the tv and receiver should be back by monday or tuesday.
and don't get a cheap unit.
after that I rewired my own theater circuits with a surge protected circuit breaker and gfi receptacles.
