I am just now running it (after scanning for viruses) so far I've decrypted the opening studio / warning segments from a Blu Ray of mine (Dawn of the Dead). It appears to be working on the main title now (it may be a while). This appears to be legitimate, working & pretty damn easy to use so far...

It decrypted the film segment (along with all others) and played back with audio on Media Center Home Cinema...

This is cool, but I'm wondering how it's decrypting the keys.

I also found MakeMKV which rips and puts into MKV file in one shot... it's listed as 30 day trial shareware, but appears they release a new version free to use before it expires.

I've tried AnyDVD and the like before this, I should just note I'm a big fan of the simple freerip tools like DVD Decrypter.

DVD Decrypter is nice, but dated. Doesn't always work (properly) with newer titles. AnyDVD is nice. Does the job and you can use any DVD/Blu-Ray copying software.

I've read about MakeMKV, but never used it. MKV is a nice container for x.264 video along with DD5.1 or DTS audio.

I will have to take a look at Bl*rayDecr*pter. I have a feeling AnyDVD is still the way to go, but time will tell.

DVD Decrypter is dated because the author had to discontinue it after legal threats and newer protections have come out since. It's still very useful. I still use DVDShrink for ripping a lot of titles (not all). I've used AnyDVD for a few problematic titles.

BluRay Decrypter worked for all 4 titles I threw at it. So did MakeMKV.

On an interesting side note, MakeMKV gave me a 30GB mkv file of Dawn of the Dead. I used Handbrake's high profile setting with a few minor changes (loose anamorphic, bitrate quality a little over 55%, mkv container) to create a H.264-based file of same HD resolution that ended up being 2.95GB. Very close to the original Blu Ray in terms of picture quality. Audio was transcoded to Dolby Pro Logic II. It looks great. File size is huge, but this is hi-def after all.. some new xvid releases are 1.5GB at half the resolution.

I don't know if I'll be able to stream this wirelessly though, my network is G.

As you might expect, it absolutely stuttered when I tried to play the original 30GB video over the G network.

But then I played the Handbrake-made 2.95GB mkv file last night on a separate computer. It takes a few seconds to get started, but once it did, it played flawlessly over my wireless G connection. Seeking different points in the movie usually took a few seconds for video to catch up with audio. I was using Media Player Classic Home Cinema. The test machine was a machine with single core 3GHz chip with Hyper Threading enabled, also the video card was an AGP 3850 which I'm sure helps.

Going to try it on my older machines, expecting some of them to choke on the processor /GPU requirements of playing high def. I might install CoreAVC on machines that need it.

I was thinking that would've been a problem, I tried last night to play a clip of my clients animation over the network and it stuttered and froze every player. the file was a m2ts, I also ran into the same problem with some hd clips I downloaded off the ng's that manuf. use as demo clips. panasonic, benq, sony and others. and I run a gb network in my house with qos and trunking.

Yeah, I honestly didn't expect the 2.9G5GB file to work. I knew the 30GB copy would choke for sure. It does take a few secs to get the smaller file started, but it works well! Hi def (or at least high def transcode) over wireless G!

I tried watching the 2.95GB mkv on my Dell Optiplex GX150 which I put a 1.4Ghz Tulatin chip in. Note that the audio is fine, but the video just lags/drops frames... it's gotta be the old system. The video card is a low profile Radeon (7500?... I forgot)), looks like I only have been using the XP drivers for it :P. So I gotta download the Catalyst drivers and install. I was able to get framerate up a little by tweaking MPCHC's video settings. I'll laugh if I can actually get this to work!

..aaaaaaaaaaand after updating the GU drivers and adding CoreAVC to the GX150, and tweaking every possible setting in MPC-HC and Catalyst Drivers, the video drops frames like nuts during playback . The GPU is only a low profile AGP 4X. I could get a newer low profile GPU with more kahoonas I suppose, but... *shrug* it's going to have serious CPU bottlenecking. Better off for UT '99 and xvids
