For those that read my "Fuck Hannspree" rants, there is a happy ending. Here's a quick and dirty review. This is not the first Samsung SyncMaster TV/Monitor I've owned (I liked the older one I had as well)

Upsides:
+Decent price for the combo: @ $299, this would be perfect for any small home office or dorm room
+Great picture for both HDTV and computer monitor
+Great color reproduction out of the box, needed minimal calibration
+It comes with a remote that I don't hate
+Component, HDMI, VGA inputs
+Decent black levels

Downsides:
-Only 23". Which isn't a horrible negative, but of course bigger is better
-Stand seems very fixed, this isn't easily repositionable
-60Hz only
-Weird menu scrolling anomaly when I positioned powered antenna close to the monitor
-Some features a little questionable such as "Viewing Angle"

Summary: Returned my 25" Hannspree shit monitor, got this, I'm very happy with it and may buy another one. Wasn't crazy about going with something smaller in size, but the HDTV functions are really quite nice.

when you get a chance post about the hybrid drives... i've seen them on sale for very good prices, but always wondered how well they work.

hybrids work better over time as they cache more frequently used files/programs. so first boot will be meh, second boot will ooo, third boot will be woah. but for a lot of other things the performance is minimal. its the same concept of having turbo cache or whatever MS choked up with usb drives.

What's up with all the advertising and descriptions of LCD monitors/TVs calling them LED monitors and LED TVs? There is no mention of LCD at all. Now there are tons of people saying they have or want to get an LED TV or monitor. They think it's a different display type (like plasma or DLP). All it is is a LCD using LEDs as the light source (instead of CCFL).

Why are people so dumb?

Because saying "Hey, this light-emitting diode backlit liquid crystal display is sooooooo much more energy efficient than the old cold cathode florescent lamp one I had" would be gay.

Too many acronyms for marketing flyers. Think of LED as shorthand. You can tour malls across America giving the masses your "LED is still LCD" seminars, I'm staying at home to watch Jenna vs. Anything That Moves Vol. 17.

LED vs LCD pisses me off... i explained over email and a few phone calls to a friend who was looking for a new TV during boxing day sales. It didn't sink into that kid and I just said I don't know. Plus boxing day usually has older model shitt which people think is a great deal but its really just a mediocre deal.

The LED lit LCDs are really not much better, or as good in some cases, as the CCFL lit ones. There are many different types of LED lighting that can be used. Some are only Edge-Lit LED or scanning LED. The quality is all over the place.

I am only comparing the LED Samsung I have to my older (only a year or two) HP LCDs here, there is a slight difference between the two. The HP's have some slightly dithered colors during some dark movie segments where there's blended colors, also I can see slight banding on things such as Firefox's gradated menu bar. On the Samsung, colors seem a little more vivid. Your name's appearance in color is a very rich (but not bright) mustard yellow, for example- I noticed that right away.

I still like the HP's I have, they're still very good. But I do notice slightly better color with the Samsung. Whether the HP's are using some perceptual color dithering tricks or the Samsungs use slightly better components, I don't know. The difference is small and I would bet many wouldn't notice, but it is definitely noticeable to my eyes.

Almost all LCDs are poor performing out-of-box (except professional models (NECs Pro line for example)). Calibration is required to get a great picture. Samsungs are typically oversaturated.

What I'm talking about has nothing to do with calibration. I have to color match every working day of the week. Every monitor I use (home or work) gets calibrated, as mentioned in previous post(s).

Yeah cause ya know everyone can afford an IPS screen...
Lets face it TN will be around for a long time. It looks good enough for most scenarios, and continues to get better each generation. The quality comes down to who implemented it the best, firmware, parts, manufacturer, etc.

I initially thought that on IPS prices too, but just noticed this 23" ViewSonic for <$300:
http://www.amazon.com/ViewSonic-VP2365WB-23-Inch-IPS-Monitor/dp/B002R0JJYO

Seems to be getting good ratings.

I agree TN is "good enough" for most settings, if IPS panels keep coming down in price then they can start marketing LED backlit IPS panels. If they just call them LED MacGyver has more fuel for rant, lol.

There are a few LCDs (IPS panel) with LED backlighting. They are not cheap and are not always as good as the CCFL version. TN panels are plain junk. The viewing angles are horrible (will never change) and color reproduction sucks (compared to VA or IPS panels). The only thing going for TN panels are they have a faster response time (good for gaming).
