and this is work-in-progress shot of my current project, a low-poly character that I'm hoping to get rigged this weekend

You drew those? Wow, you've got some talent.

I can barely draw a straight line with a ruler. That's why I picked up photography (still more of a hack with that than anything else)...the camera does the hard part.

Good job on the drawings and thanks for sharing.

...!!!!

I always thought the work you'd posted before was great, but man, you have just gotten better.

It's not often a 'dump' like this gets posted, makes me sad for the old days. I might have even just teared up a little.

<3 indeed.

Thanks for the <3
Here's a couple more shots of Moustachio (tentative name). I started the project two weeks ago, but have spent more of that time breaking things than fixing them. As of last night I'm at what I hope is a point where those particular troubles have been handled. UVs are done, so I can get into some painting soon (the texture shown here is temporary).

A mess.

Actually it's only behaved like a mess,
because I can't get my head around setting up a proper IK rig.
I've rebuilt the rig twice, and now have a very simple skeleton with 40 bones,
including a few for IK. The first rig was an automated job, which looks good and works fine,
but it's way too complex for me at this point.
So I decided to build it myself, and it seemed okay until suddenly Blender started crawling.
I thought maybe I set up the bones wrong, so I did it over again...same result.
Then went back to the plugin...same result.
Finally discovered that the plugin rig, even though it was deleted,
left some vertex groups in the file that were in conflict with the new rig.
So now I'm on the third rig, and still have to tweak the weight maps before animating.
And have to learn more about IK chains.

I can't believe you're doing that in blender

Nice drawings
a couple remind me of that shambling good monster thing in the Dark Crystal

Dark Crystal: I was seeing the same thing appear, and consciously tried to avoid it.
It bugs me when some random drawing starts looking like something well-known.

Blender: I generally don't use pirated software anymore, so I can either use free software
and eat, or use proprietary software and go into debt. I've come to appreciate FOSS, though...
even if there are not yet any "industry standard" graphics applications coming out of free
software, many of the apps are rapidly improving to the point of being just as good as their
proprietary counterparts in many tasks. Photoshop has certain features that Gimp doesn't have,
but I don't miss Photoshop much these last 7 or 8 years in which I haven't touched it.
In a similar way, Blender is now my replacement for Lightwave, and I no longer miss it.
In that situation, though, it was only since Blender 2.5. I found previous versions annoying.
That said, I haven't touched this project in 3 months or so, and barely have done anything
with Blender in that time.

I find character rigging for valve or udk difficult using maya and xsi and max
nevermind fighting the arcane blender interface.

the fact that you got it in the game engine with an anim is impressive

The flowing curvy lines you use to make some of the big nose characters is where I was seeing bits of the shambling guy

they're nice, its a nice flowing "groovy" style

wow, you guys are all still here! Thanks for posting this Blog. I just clicked the title of the thread not even looking to see who the author was, and I instantly recognized the drawing as being yours. Glad to see you're still doing art!

What's the mustache rig for? just for fun? Btw, I feel your pain, rigging sucks
