I'm not sure how those savy devs over @ github created their 404 error message but it is pretty cool. I think they have a similar error message setup for 500 responses as well. The 404 error message can be viewed here You have to hover mouse over the Star Wars graphic to get the full effect. There is no flash going on with this so I am assuming their using some sort of JavaScript technique. Any thoughts on how this is done would be cool.

Javascript tracking the position of the mouse and positioning the images accordingly. The initial positioning is done with CSS (check out what it looks like with "no style" applied to the page) so it still looks good for browsers with javascript disabled. It's a fairly simple concept, but very cute and clever.

I really like this, but I think it's a little heavy to be used as a 404 (still not as bad as homestarrunner's 404)

Awesome, thanks for the info on the 404 message. I might get adventurous and try to put something similar together for my blog. And yeah, using Flash for a 404 message seems like a little overkill for me as well, but isn't homestarrunner.com all about the flash anyways. (just saying)
