Lately (last two days) my computer has been freezing like crazy.

At first i the screen will freeze and i still have sound and can move my mouse, but can't click on anything. Then the sound gets garbled and finally locks up completely about 5 seconds later.

No viruses or malware
Ran memtest but computer froze at 95% (0 errors up to that point)
Windows is updated, video card updated

any suggestions would be appreciated

tia =)

boot into BIOS and watch the temperatures/fan speeds for a while. That's the only suggestion I have.

possible run away process
check task manager or logs

if it froze during memtest, may be a faulty mem stick. the freezing could be due to a instruction being writted to the bad location and windows freezes trying to read it.

otherwise, place it next to a fireplace or turn up the heat to warm it up.*L*

ran memtest86

although it says 1 full pass is enough to find all but the most obsscure error i ran two. No errors... aparently everything is fine. now i'm really at a loss. damn computer locks up at least 5 times a day. borderline unusable.

could it be the hard drive?

what's the cpu temp?
are you overclocking it?
have you updated the mobo bios?
have you updated the drivers?
what to you have connected to the pc?
have you ran performance monitor to record disk, cpu, pagefile, and memory performance?
oh, have you ran a harddrive test?

I've got a Phenom II x4 965
- Will start around 35c, while using computer might get to around 40-44c and during gaming (sc2 or tf2) 50c. My temps use to be a little higher but i installed new case fans to bring it down. Wasn't an issue even before the new case fans but didn't like the idea of cpu getting to 50c even if it was while gaming

No overclocking

Haven't updated the mobo bios

All drivers are up to date

Nothing unusual connected to computer: keyboard, mouse, router/modem, speakers. Not even a printer.

only performance monitor i ran was the windows experience thing and memtest86.

How do i run a hard drive test? (sorry for my ignorance)

go to the drive manuf. site and they should have utils to test.
seagate has seatools, wd has a tool.
if you have a hirens or ubcd4win boot disk they have many utils to test the components.

was it always freezing up or just recently?
if just recently backtrack and undo from recent o older changes one at a time until it's stable.

if it's always froze, try updating the bios. seen old bios cause instability.
