Seriously, i thought blu-ray was gonna be a big evolution in how we watch movies. Amazing clarity, cool extra's, etc etc. Honestly i dislike just about everything about blu-ray

1- Takes a while to load depending on the blu-ray player
2- Ridiculous amount of commercials including commercials about blu-ray as if it was still in competition with hd discs
3- I can't skip through commercials only fast forward
4- Extras are usually boring as hell and the online content for some of the discs is usually just rubbish.
5- I've had 3 blu-ray players and used other folks blu-ray players and i've found it's 10x more temperamental than dvd. the slighest scratch or fingerprint will throw a monkey wrench into things.
6- On the computer you have to purchase the software to play blu-rays.

tl;dr I'm disappointed with blu-ray technology.

anyone else feel this way or are the rest of you generally happy with blu-ray?

a long time ago I said it sucked compared to hd-dvd.
I have a ps3 for playing br, and a br drive in my home theater pc. I don't buy many br movies and I burn mostly data and videos in native format for storage. havn't burned a br movie disk yet.
most home theaters we have done where the owner wants br I suggest getting a ps3, if they decline I recommend a high end player or a sony mid to high range model. but most choose the cheap best buys specials and regret it.

but leave it to sony to buy their way to the top and then back off now that they control the market with no competition.
I still hunt down old hd-dvd movies from time to time and use that more than the ps3 because it upconverts dvd's much better.

Love my PS3 BR movies. On my tv they look amazing and I have no idea what you are talking about with respect to damage... I find the new coating to be as durable and resilient as advertised.

I don't mind the load time since that's just part of the new system. I wait less than 30 seconds for it to load up... I can wait for that.

I agree that it would be nice to be able to skip the ads and stuff, but the movie companies want to force you to watch their advertising. They create the content afterall, not Sony BR. And yes, Sony is just as guilty for touting BR using their technology... as I say, I wish they wouldn't do that, but whatever... that's just time that I use to get ready to watch the movie.

It's an adjustment because it is still quite new and many homes still haven't moved up to Blu-Ray so there's still a lot of promoting going on... in time, it'll settle down.

Probably would have been version 3 if DVD+R had been pushed off the shelf.

Why they decided to announce that that the format would support Java in specs, I'll never understand. Seemed like a huge step backwards to me.

Have had a couple moments of a film freezing/crashing on me, it sucks when it happens, but it's only happened 2 or 3 times for me.

Agree on the commercials being annoying, but I get that wayyyy more with discs from a rental store. Usually on films I've bought I have to go through it only once.

Extras often suck just as much as when everything was DVD *shrug*. All that online stuff is pretty well useless, imo.

I agree on the computer software front that it sucks, but that's because anyone that releases a player that decodes the video without paying the license is opening themselves up to Sony's lawyers. I have had several OEM copies of PowerDVD (bundled with my bd-r drives), both worked well, then stopped working to nag about updates, and when I did finally update them, I got nothing but freezing.

I love the resolution, detail and colors that high def in general offers. Blu definitely looks better to me than most cable signal sources and anything on streaming.

What I don't like is seeing releases with AC-3/Dolby Digital Audio without a lossless soundtrack offered. I know on some older films it won't matter much, but if you're selling the High Def experience, it should bloody well be lossless audio.

I would rather see older films "as they were" with grain rather than having so much digital noise reduction done that faces look wax-like. I'm okay with some DNR if it's used judiciously. Some studios get it, some don't.

Still, I've owned lots of movies in older formats, and 99% of the Blus blow them away. I'm in love with well done high definition (not so much Blu-Ray itself).

Just rent a BD movie, or buy and rip and return. The encryption has been broken forever. And most even cheap media players support unencrypted BD iso's. All the extra's are just frills. Never enjoyed extra's on DVD's.

No plans to every get BD movies, unless it was completely neccessary for some crazed reason in my fickle mind.

Hell I just bought myself a 32" screen thats only 720p. 1080p seems stupid to me still. Heh.

For the BR movies I buy/rent, they get ripped on the PC, dumped on the NAS server, then streamed to my XMBC box when I want to watch them.

To hell with previews I can't skip and all that other crap!

hah.

I like the "cat" pic.
so true.

I personally find it easier to deal with downloading an avi
slightly compressed, but you get to know the release artists you like

the fallout isn't really over yet
honestly
the hi def wars aren't over IMHO
because optical media is LAME

I'd stick with a ps3 at first
eventually there will be no disks
we'll have little cs cards with a terabyte
so we won't be burning optical media

star trek, when they put the little wafer disk in and the thing holds the library of congress
remember that?

I hate the ads on discs too.
its been so long since I rented a movie because of that
I'd rather wait for a decent rip

and on top of all that
how many movies have you seen this year
that were actually worth $20 to you

?
I just went through 10 newer movies this holidays
and I only watched 2 of them all the way without fast forwarding through some lame ass plot device crapola

Idiocracy was better than Avatar IMHO
=P

Just bought something actually...
"Louis CK: Live at the Beacon Theater"

Its not everyday I buy a media, and I am not a huge Louis CK fan either. He is funny though, and he does make it easy to get his show, I am downloading it right now. Took under a minute to buy it, and will take ~1 hour to download. He says I am free to do whatever I please with the video now, which is great, no more sitting through ads.

the more ad's, in some cases the more money.
what kills me are the numerous movie previews, thy keep shoving it in your face as if that will make you want to see it. hell, if I wanted to see it, I'd buy or steal it.*LOL*
I can't remember which bray it was but it was over 10 minutes or previews, advertisments, and there's so many buttons not allowed, you just give up and either sit through it or curse at the screen.

I tend to get righteous copies and burn them to disc and watch them. pop it in, hit play and enjoy. anything else is like having a scab being picked off.*LOL*
