Was helping a friend of mine today

her mom just bought a new HP computer, which had a modem pre-installed in a PCI slot..

Windows Me all installed and running.. but the dreaded "Unkown Device" in Device manager for the modem...

the CD's the computer came with had no "drivers" foler, just a bunch images, and i tried to go to "control panel", "modems", "detect my modem", which of course, "didn't find a modem"

So i tried for an hour to add manually using different COM ports and different "standard drivers", all to know available..

finally said f-ck it and went to Best Buy and picked up a US Robotics mode and that thing installed with no issues...

So i ask.. was/is there anything i can do about the other modem?? ( was there something i missed? )

Go to HP support, go to the download/drivers area and enter the model of the pc

/dev/clue was linked to /dev/null

that helps the after the fact issue...

but maybe what i am wondering more than anything..
why wouldnt the system pick it up during Plug and Pray ?

would the drivers tel the OS "hey i am a modem!!" ?
